The
reconstruction and development of the Colombo-Kandy Road section from Kadawatha
to Nittambuwa got completed by Access Engineering PLC, one of the leading civil
engineering companies in Sri Lanka. The reconstruction plan was launched by the
Road Development Authority (RDA) with the aid of funding from local banks to
relieve traffic congestion between the economic corridors.
The
Colombo-Kandy (A1) road is the main shuttle access route through Central
Province, North West Province, North Central Province, Northern Province, and
Eastern Province to get to the capital. As the project's main contractor, Access
Engineering PLC (AEL) was responsible for expanding and upgrading existing
cross-drainage systems, raised footwalks and center median/islands,
rehabilitating and upgrading road pavement layout, and strengthening the
current drainage system. The scope of work extended to promoting comprehensive
land acquisition and utility shifting works.
The scope of
work also included urban improvements to the junctions of Imbulgoda, Belummahara,
Yakkala, and Thihariya, the expansion of four bridges over Balummahara Oya and
Uruwal Oya, extension and reconstruction of two key RCC girder bridges to 25 m
and 22 m high. The 23 km, two-lane straighten from Kadawatha (17 + 000 km) to
Nittambuwa (40 + 000 km) rehabilitated and strengthened to a standard four-lane
carriageway where the width of a single lane was 3.7 m with a center median of
1.2 m wide, allowing the traffic congestion to reduce during peak times.
The project even
built the pedestrian walkways with 2.4 m wide soft bears on either side of the
highway along with 0.6 m broad stiff shoulders to meet the comfort of the
pedestrians. The widened four-lane carriageway ensures free long-distance flow
and metropolitan bound traffic, thereby contributing to improving the overall
transport infrastructure network in support of the country's economic
development. AEL is proud to be a pivotal contributor to promoting greater
access to main roads and expressways while steadily increasing industrial
growth along the economic corridor.
OSL Take: The
reconstruction and development of the Colombo-Kandy Road section from Kadawatha
to Nittambuwa project is yet another large scale development project launched
by the government of Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan administration is currently
engaged in a development program covering the entire country. This project has
created many business/investment opportunities for foreign businesses to
explore. Also, the ongoing development program will help the country's overall
economic growth that would attract more foreign businesses/investors to the country.
Sri Lanka's geographical positioning in the Indian Ocean and the many trade
agreements, as well as trade concessions enjoyed by the state, adds to its
attraction as a business destination in the South Asian region.
